" poll has the president a full ten points ahead of romney in ohio. 53% to 43%. let's begin with cnn white house correspondent dan lothian. >> reporter: joe, even though a new poll shows the president with a double digit lead in ohio, mr. obama continues to push hard in the state. it's a huge priority for the campaign according to a top aide. by our count the president has visited ohio at least 13 times so far this year. this time ahead of early voting, which by the w begins next tuesday. now, today the president was again selling his policies and his record in a state he says has benefitted from the auto bailout. he talked about the thousands of jobs created but also hit china and went after his gop opponent. >> he's been talking tough on china. he says he's going to take the fight to them. he's going to go after these cheaters. and i've got to admit, that message is better than what he's actually done about this thing. it sounds better than talking about all the years he spent profiting from companies that sent our jobs to china. so when you hear this newfound outrage, when you see
. mitt romney losing major ground there, according to new polls. before we go there, got to talk about one problem, that both candidates agree the world is running out of time to fix. let's turn to the united nations general assembly where the much anticipated speech byo outgoing president was overshadowed by mohamed morsi. listen to how he introduced himself. >> translator: i am the first egyptian civilian president elected democratically and free, following a great, peaceful revolution halted by the entire world. >> let's go richard roth, covers the u.n. for us. listen to the speech, it sounds like he's stepping it up, ready to be this world leader, world negotiator. is that fair that he's made the move from muslim brotherhood to world leader? >> reporter: well, i think he's still both things. the leader of egypt, decades ago, nasser and others, they had a prominent place when it came to the middle east. there has been this vacuum ever since. president mubarak had never even been here at the u.n. in the last 15 years and played a much quieter role on the global stage in the middle ea
know that polls are actually showing the president is leading romney in ohio. this is the cnn poll of polls. average of four most recent surveys. the president ahead, 55-41%. why do you think that is so significant right now? >> he has more than 40 days to go before this election, but keep in mind that the presidential debates, a series of presidential debates in that vice presidential debate gets going next week. so he doesn't have a whole lot of time on the ground to persuade swing state voters like here in ohio that he needs them on his side, and you can see he has this economic message behind me right now in big letters on that sign. it says we need a real recovery. he has been fine-tuning his economic message all morning long. trying to reconnect with voters in this stais state. he said at a hearing in the western of the state that his heartaches for people who are struggling in this economy. take a listen to a little bit of what he had to say earlier this morning. >> there is so many in our country that are hurting right now. i want to help them. he know what it takes to get
in polling. mitt romney is depending primarily on blue color whites and older whites. he's doing fine with those voters but he's not cracking into deeply enough the central coalition. >> what about working class women. >> this is something really interesting. working class white women are not as democratic as is often assumed. the college educated white women, democrats have won them. but the working class usually lean republican. in 2008 obama only won 41% of them. as we look across the board in the battle ground states and i've been looking at different polls, obama ask moving up with these working class white woman in places like ohio, wisconsin, even florida he's moving up to around 50% of them. that makes the math almost impossible for mitt romney in those states and they are responding largely to the economic message, the bain arguments, the 47 arguments, medicare, taxes. that is where it seems to be doing damage to romney. >> you asked the question would you say you were better off than you were during the 2008 presidential election. 31% thought they were better off. 31% worse
obama ahead of romney by seven points. in florida, fox news poll shows the president ahead of romney by five points. very similar to all these other so-called mainstream poll numbers. you don't hear them complaining about the fox news polls. they're complaining about the others. so there is an imbalance there. if you take a look at all these polls, and we at cnn did a poll of polls, you show -- it clearly shows that the president is ahead slightly in almost all of these key battleground states. and i think that's pretty significant. >> we were just showing virginia and now here is florida and they're saying exactly what you just said. and here is the thing. yes we're 40 days out. but early voting, we started the program talking about the significance of early voting and the volumes of people who do early voting. so regardless of what the romney camp is saying about their internal polls, is it entirely possible they are seeing these polls that are now as i said solidifying with early voters and saying it may be time to spend the money on down ballot contenders and go for the house and
for mitt romney. there are two new polls today by the american research group and they have mitt romney trailing president obama in two more swing states. five points in new hampshire and two in virginia. although i wanted to highlight the virginia one. there had been other polls to show that gap wider. this would be a much better than expected result than some of the others we've seen. this week, all in has not been kind to the republican candidate, as polls have shown him falling behind the president. but he is not showing any change in confident. >> i've got a little secret here and that is that obama campaign thinks that pennsylvania is in their pocket. they don't need to worry about it. and you're right and they're wrong. we're going to win pennsylvania. we're going to take the white house. >> he's going to have to overcome a big deficit to do it, but people do like a comeback kid. max, jen, the obama campaign press secretary. two very different problems. one, you don't want to get complacent and two, you don't want to get too far behind. matt, mitt romney was in pennsylvania today
of the nine swing states. journal marist poll showing romney trailing the president by 7 points in new hampshire. romney trailing obama by two points in north carolina, that's within the margin of error. and same in nevada, two-point spread for the president. that's within the margin of error. so none of those polls really urge shattering, but certainly showing that president obama is -- has an advantage in these swing states. >> yeah. you know, the one that is i little surprising to me is north carolina. i would have thought romney would be doing better. the president, he carried north carolina the last time, but by a tiny, tiny margin. so that's a little surprising that even though it is within the margin of error, 48/46, he's still ahead in north carolina right now. if romney can't win north carolina, he's going to be in deep, deep trouble because that's a state, i assumed was going to be going for the republican candidate this time. maybe, you know, holding the democratic convention in charlotte energized that democratic base in north carolina. maybe that will rereally help them. i
